Federal Science and Technology Personnel Numbers Decline Slightly 2026-2027

In the 2026/2027 fiscal year, Statistics Canada reported a slight reduction in the number of federal personnel engaged in science and technology activities across Canada. Total science and technology staff fell to 41,025, down from 42,520 in 2022/2023. Personnel in natural sciences and engineering declined to 26,881 from 28,311, while those in social sciences, humanities and the arts were 14,144 compared with 14,209. Research and development staff total decreased to 11,824 from 11,868. Related scientific activities staff reduced to 25,147 from 26,448. Administration of extramural research and related scientific activities programs also saw modest decreases, with total programs staff at 2,711 and 1,343 respectively in 2026/2027.
