European Commission has approved a €402 million aid package to help Spanish road transport companies cope with higher fuel costs caused by the Middle East crisis. The aid, approved under the Middle East Crisis Temporary State Aid Framework (METSAF), will be provided as direct grants. Companies already receiving a diesel tax refund can receive up to 70% of the extra fuel costs between 1 March and 30 June 2026. Those not eligible for the tax refund can receive either a €50,000 cap per company or 70% of additional fuel costs from 1 March to 31 December 2026. The Commission judged the scheme necessary, proportionate and not detrimental to trade, and approved it under EU State aid rules.
