Food and beverage manufacturing projected to grow, adding most jobs in manufacturing sector to 2034

Food and beverage manufacturing employment is projected to rise to over 2.2 million by 2034, the largest increase among U.S. manufacturing sectors. The industry grew from about 1.7 million workers in 2014 to roughly 2.1 million in 2024, and is expected to reach more than 2.2 million in 2034. In 2024, it accounted for 16 percent of all manufacturing jobs, the highest share of any of the 20 manufacturing industries. By 2034, beverage manufacturing is projected to add the most jobs—about 37,800—followed by animal slaughtering and processing with roughly 35,400 new positions. Other segments, such as fruit and vegetable preserving and seafood packaging, are forecast to see small declines of 1,200 and 800 jobs, respectively.
