Norway’s kindergarten and school workforce: 98,160 employees, majority women

Statistics Norway released data on employees in kindergartens and schools for the reference week of 2025. A total of 98 160 people were employed in kindergartens, of whom 88.5 % were women. In primary and lower secondary schools there were 118 191 employees, 73.6 % of them women. Upper secondary schools employed 42 561 staff members, 58.9 % women. Adult education institutions had 5 716 employees, 76.1 % women. Among teachers, 33 046 kindergarten teachers (89.5 % women), 79 226 primary and lower secondary teachers (73.0 % women), 28 919 upper secondary teachers (56.5 % women), and 4 014 adult education teachers (78.1 % women). The statistics cover wage earners employed during the third week of November, excluding non‑residents. The data reflect employees classified by occupation, age, and educational background.
