The Defence Science and Technology Laboratory (Dstl) has collaborated with the British Army, industry partners, and international allies to develop counter-drone technologies and AI capabilities for future warfare. Project VANAHEIM, a UK–US initiative, tested counter-drone systems with light infantry units in Germany and Poland during 2025, aiming to enhance troop protection and operational effectiveness. Further trials will occur in Lithuania under Project FLYTRAP. Meanwhile, Project ANVIL delivers computer vision models for drone-based target identification, integrating AI to improve reconnaissance missions. These systems, part of the Initial Experimentation Systems (IES), are being deployed with three Army units to refine battlefield applications. Dstl’s work builds on AUKUS technologies to support the UK’s development of swarming UAS capabilities.
