Increase in Recipients of Social Assistance in Norway

Oslo, 23 June 2023 – The number of individuals relying on social assistance as their main source of income in Norway has seen a concerning rise, according to the latest update. In 2022, a total of 47,530 people depended on social assistance to meet their basic needs, highlighting the importance of welfare support in the country.

Among the recipients of social assistance, single males accounted for a significant portion, with a total of 47,480 individuals. Single females also constituted a considerable number, with 32,059 recipients.

The data further reveals that social assistance served as the primary source of income for the aforementioned 47,530 individuals. This indicates the reliance on social welfare programs to sustain their livelihoods.

In terms of expenditure, Norway allocated a substantial amount of NOK 7,418,865 for social assistance in 2022. The average payment per month amounted to NOK 11,127, emphasizing the financial support provided to those in need.

The increase in recipients of social assistance highlights the importance of addressing socioeconomic challenges and implementing effective policies to ensure the well-being of vulnerable individuals and families in Norway.
