Norway Expands Support to Ukraine by Donating Additional NASAMS Equipment

The Norwegian government has announced its decision to donate an additional support package of NASAMS (Norwegian Advanced Surface-to-Air Missile System) equipment to Ukraine’s air force. The package includes two fire control centers, two launch units, and spare parts. This donation aims to enhance endurance, redundancy, and flexibility, further bolstering the effectiveness of Ukraine’s air defense capabilities, according to Defense Minister Bjørn Arild Gram (Sp).

Norway, in collaboration with the United States, has previously donated two complete NASAMS fire units to Ukraine. These contributions supplement the two units previously donated by the US in autumn 2022.

The urgent need for air defense is a top priority for Ukraine, given the threat of Russian air power and missile attacks. The successful operational track record of NASAMS has made it highly desirable for Ukraine, emphasizing the significance of air defense systems in general and NASAMS in particular, as highlighted by Gram.

The Norwegian Armed Forces have assessed that the donation of the NASAMS support package will have minimal operational consequences.

Lithuania’s Donation of NASAMS Launch Units

Kongsberg Defense & Aerospace (KDA) has recently signed a contract with Lithuania to upgrade and prepare two older NASAMS launch units for donation to Ukraine. These launch units will complement the NASAMS systems previously donated by the US and Norway. The Lithuanian authorities announced the donation in a press release on June 28, 2023, also mentioning that Norway will contribute additional equipment to accompany the launch units.

This collaborative effort underscores the international support for Ukraine’s air defense capabilities and emphasizes the commitment of multiple nations to safeguard Ukraine’s security.
