Commission Implementing Regulation (EU) 2023/1300 amends special control measures for ASF
Oslo, Norway – Norway has implemented changes to strengthen control measures against African Swine Fever (ASF) by adopting Commission Implementing Regulation (EU) 2023/1300. The regulation amends Annex I to Implementing Regulation (EU) 2023/594, which lays down special control measures for ASF.
ASF is a viral disease that affects both wild and domesticated pigs. The disease can have significant consequences for the swine population and the profitability of pig farming, affecting the movement of live pigs and related products within the European Economic Area (EEA) and for export to third countries. Outbreaks of the disease pose a risk of transmission both within pig holdings and among wild boar populations.
The spread of ASF in several EEA countries and third countries presents a constant risk of further transmission to unaffected EEA countries. To limit the spread of the disease, the EU has established Regulation (EU) 2023/594, which specifies special control measures for ASF. This regulation complements the general provisions of Animal Health Regulation (EU) 2016/429 and Control Regulation (EU) 2020/687.
Annex I of Regulation (EU) 2023/594 lists the EEA countries affected by ASF outbreaks and the various control zones within these countries. The annex is continuously updated to reflect changes in the epidemiological situation.
The regulation amends Annex I of Regulation (EU) 2021/594 to update the list of countries and zones based on the epidemiological situation of ASF in Greece, Hungary, Poland, and Slovakia.
The implementation of the regulation is not expected to have significant economic or administrative consequences. The Norwegian authorities and the Norwegian Food Safety Authority (Mattilsynet) consider the regulation EEA-relevant and acceptable.
These measures aim to strengthen the control and prevention of ASF, protecting the swine population and ensuring the stability of the pig farming industry in Norway.
