1.6 Million Passengers Travel through Finland’s Airports in June 2023

According to statistics released by the Finnish Statistics Center, a total of approximately 1.6 million passengers traveled through Finland’s airports in June 2023. This marked a 7% increase compared to the previous year but was still a third less than the number of passengers in June 2019, before the COVID-19 pandemic.

The data revealed that domestic flight passenger numbers decreased by 13% compared to the same period in 2022. On the other hand, the number of passengers on international flights grew by 12% in comparison to June 2022.

International Flights Continue to Grow: In June 2023, Helsinki-Vantaa Airport served 1.4 million passengers, and other domestic airports collectively handled 175,000 passengers. Helsinki-Vantaa Airport accounted for 89% of the total domestic airport passenger traffic.

Out of all air travel passengers, 86% traveled on international flights, and the remaining 14% on domestic flights. At Helsinki-Vantaa Airport, 92% of passengers were on international flights, while at other domestic airports combined, this figure was 36%. Compared to June 2022, passenger numbers increased by 8% at Helsinki-Vantaa Airport and 1% at other domestic airports.

Passenger Volume Remains Lower Than Pre-Pandemic Levels: The number of passengers remained one-third lower than the pre-pandemic level. In June 2023, the passenger traffic at Helsinki-Vantaa Airport was 32% lower, and at other domestic airports, it was 39% lower than in June 2019. The year 2019 serves as a benchmark for comparing air traffic passenger volumes before the pandemic’s impact.

Air Cargo and Postage Transport: In June 2023, a total of 15,817 tons of cargo and postage were transported by air. Out of this, 97% passed through Helsinki-Vantaa Airport, and 99% of the cargo was transported on flights between Finland and other countries. Of the total transported goods, 46% (7,208 tons) were arrivals, and 54% (8,610 tons) were departures.
