Norway Marks the 12-Year Commemoration of 22nd July with a Call for Democracy and Unity

On the 12th-anniversary commemoration of the tragic events of 22nd July 2011, Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre addressed the nation from Regjeringskvartalet. The memorial event aimed to honor the victims of the terror attacks that struck both the government quarter and Utøya island, with 77 names solemnly read aloud once again.

In his speech, Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre acknowledged the passage of time since the tragic day, emphasizing that the memory of 22nd July remains etched in the nation’s consciousness. While new government buildings have risen, the healing process continues.

The Prime Minister stressed the importance of truthfully acknowledging the events of 22nd July as a targeted political attack against the Labor Party (Arbeiderpartiet) and its youth wing, AUF. Furthermore, he highlighted how insights into the perpetrator’s attitudes have deepened over the years, underscoring the need to understand the roots of extremist ideologies.

Jonas Gahr Støre expressed concern over the rise of hatred, harassment, and extremist actions globally, as seen in the tragic attack on a mosque in Bærum in 2019 and an attack against a Pride event the previous year. He praised the resilience of the people who stood strong against such hateful backgrounds and urged the nation to draw strength from its diversity and unity, as exemplified during the vibrant Pride celebrations.

The Prime Minister also touched upon the international backdrop, voicing Norway’s unwavering support for Ukraine in the face of Russia’s ongoing aggression and human rights violations. He emphasized the importance of strengthening Norway’s defense and standing united with NATO allies, while also rejecting ideologies that undermine democracy.

Recognizing the courage of the survivors of the Utøya massacre, some of whom have since taken on significant political roles, Prime Minister Støre lauded their resilience and determination. He expressed pride in having members of his government who are survivors, as well as other officials at various levels of governance.

Acknowledging the construction of a permanent 22nd July memorial center near the high-rise building, the Prime Minister expressed gratitude to all who fought for this important project to honor the victims and perpetuate remembrance.

Prime Minister Støre praised the youth and the AUF for their continued dedication to democracy and emphasized the importance of open dialogue, knowledge-sharing, and understanding to counteract extremist ideologies and conspiracy theories. He concluded his speech by commemorating the victims, supporting the bereaved, and expressing gratitude to all who have worked tirelessly to aid survivors and others affected by the tragic events.

The 12-year commemoration of 22nd July served as a poignant reminder of the significance of unity, democracy, and resilience in Norway’s ongoing journey towards healing and remembrance.
