Norwegian Police Receive Hundreds of Unregistered Weapons During Amnesty

Since the introduction of the firearm amnesty on January 1st this year, Agder police district has received 565 unregistered firearms. Most of these were shotguns and rifles.

The amnesty will run until June 1st, and police are urging individuals who possess such weapons to turn them in. If surrendered by the deadline, no charges will be filed for possession of the unregistered firearms.

“The amnesty is introduced to prevent crime and serious accidents with firearms. If anyone is unsure if they have an unregistered firearm, they can contact the police for advice and guidance,” says Tom Eklund, head of the administration section of the Agder police district.

Firearms can be surrendered at any police station in the district.

If surrendering a firearm to the police, individuals must ensure that the weapon is not loaded and properly packaged before transportation.

Explosives, grenades, gunpowder, and fireworks should not be brought to the police. If unsure how to handle the firearm, individuals can seek help from firearms experts or call the police at 02800.

For media inquiries, Tom Eklund, head of the administration section of the Agder police district, is the spokesperson for this matter and can be reached at 90 53 76 90 today, Friday, May 12th, until 6 pm.
