Bundeswehr Tests Exoskeletons for Logistics Support in Field Tank Base Construction

The German Bundeswehr is testing exoskeletons to provide logistics support in the construction of a field tank base for the Air Defender 23 exercise, which will involve 24 nations with 220 aircraft. The field tank base is being constructed by the German Armed Forces Joint Support Service (SKB) in collaboration with the 164th Pioneer Regiment at the Wunstorf air base in Lower Saxony, Germany. The exoskeletons are being used by some of the specialized pioneers to help reduce strain on their backs during heavy lifting tasks. The exoskeletons are designed to support the lower back and improve endurance, making it easier for the soldiers to lift and carry heavy loads. In addition to physical relief, the Bundeswehr is also testing how well the exoskeletons allow soldiers to perform tasks such as entering and operating military vehicles, and how quickly they can remove the exoskeletons in case of emergencies. The use of exoskeletons in logistics support is part of a research project led by the Future Development and Digitization Directorate of the SKB, in collaboration with the Fraunhofer Institute for Production Technology and Automation. Soldiers who have tested the exoskeletons have reported a significant reduction in strain on their backs and improved performance during physically demanding tasks. The Bundeswehr is actively exploring the potential of exoskeletons to enhance the capabilities of its personnel in various operational scenarios.
