Germany’s population grew by 1.3% in 2022

The increase was driven by a significant rise in net immigration, particularly due to the influx of refugees from Ukraine. Additionally, more people died than were born, resulting in a surplus of deaths over births. The western and eastern German states both experienced population growth. The number of people with foreign citizenship increased by 1.4 million, with Turkish, Ukrainian, and Syrian citizenship being the most common. The population of individuals under 20 years old increased by 2.8%.
