EU-CELAC Summit: Germany’s Chancellor Scholz Emphasizes Permanent Collaboration

The third EU-CELAC Summit took place in Brussels, with EU Heads of State and Government meeting with leaders from 33 Latin American and Caribbean countries. Chancellor Scholz hailed the summit as a successful event.

The meeting saw the leaders of the European Union and CELAC countries come together to discuss various issues and reinvigorate a long-missed tradition of collaboration. One of the crucial outcomes was the agreement to establish permanent cooperation between the regions, convening every two years.

Key Collaborative Efforts

  1. Climate Change and Biodiversity: Both the EU and the Latin American and Caribbean countries pledged to work together to address climate change and preserve biodiversity.
  2. Trade Relations: A fresh perspective on international trade policy emerged, with a focus on building resilient trade and economic ties. The summit emphasized expanding the production of fertilizers to more countries and ensuring that the initial stages of raw material processing take place in the countries of origin. The aim is to generate prosperity in a manner that improves the lives of local communities while minimizing environmental impact.
  3. Mercosur Agreement: Chancellor Scholz expressed optimism that the Mercosur agreement has gained momentum, and there is hope for a positive outcome soon.

Global-Gateway-Investment Agenda

The summit witnessed the conclusion of the Global-Gateway-Investment Agenda, consisting of over 130 sustainable and fair projects, including initiatives to produce green hydrogen, upgrade power grids, and enhance digital connectivity. The EU and its member states plan to invest more than 45 billion euros in Latin America and the Caribbean by 2027 to advance this agenda.

Impact of the Russian Aggression on the World

Chancellor Scholz addressed the issue of Russia’s aggression against Ukraine, stating that it has global ramifications. Many South American states are grappling with higher prices and food security concerns due to this crisis. The summit participants aligned on the fact that this aggression constitutes an attack and voiced a united stance against it.

The Chancellor expressed concern over Russia’s decision not to extend the Black Sea grain shipment agreement, describing it as a negative development that reflects a lack of responsibility towards global cooperation. He pointed out Russia’s imperialistic interests and highlighted the necessity of countering such actions.

The EU-CELAC summits serve as essential forums for dialogue and collaboration between Europe and Latin American and Caribbean countries. Numerous heads of state and government from both regions, along with EU officials, participated in the event.
