U.S. and Germany Strengthen Economic Cooperation in Second Round of Dialogue

On September 27th, 2023, German State Secretary Joerg Kukies, G7/G20 Sherpa, and Economic Advisor of the Federal Chancellor, engaged in discussions with U.S. Deputy National Security Advisor for International Economics Mike Pyle, along with their respective delegations. The meeting addressed a spectrum of bilateral, regional, and global economic issues, as part of the ongoing U.S.-Germany Economic Dialogue initiated in the 2021 Washington Declaration.

Key areas of focus during the talks included strategies to advance the clean energy transition, bolster energy security, fortify and uphold multilateralism, promote technology development while safeguarding economic security, and jointly address critical challenges facing the global economy.

Furthermore, representatives from German and U.S. companies participated in discussions with the aim of enhancing trade and investment between the two nations.

The German delegation featured Director General for Economic, Financial, and Climate Policy in the Federal Chancellery Steffen Meyer, State Secretary Udo Philipp from the Federal Ministry of Economic Affairs and Climate Action, State Secretary Heiko Thoms from the Federal Ministry of Finance, and State Secretary Jochen Flasbarth from the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development.

The U.S. delegation included Ambassador to Germany Amy Gutmann, Deputy Secretary of the Treasury Wally Adeyemo, Under Secretary of State for Economic Growth, Energy, and the Environment Jose W. Fernandez, National Security Council Senior Directors Tarun Chhabra and Sarah Ladislaw, National Security Council Director Brendan Kelly, Assistant Secretary of the Treasury for International Finance Brent Neiman, and Deputy Chief of Mission Woodward C. Price.

The discussions were part of the U.S.-Germany Economic Dialogue initiated with the 2021 Washington Declaration.

The talks centered on promoting the green transformation, improving energy security, strengthening and protecting multilateralism, supporting technology development, preserving economic security, and addressing challenges in the global economy.

Additionally, participants met with representatives from German and U.S. companies to discuss strengthening trade and investment.
