Germany’s November 2023 Death Figures Show a 1% Increase in Line with Historical Averages

In a recent report, Germany’s Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) revealed that 88,017 people passed away in November 2023. This number falls within the median range of the years 2019 to 2022 for the same month, showing a marginal 1% increase. Analyzing weekly data, early November reported a slight 4% rise compared to the previous years, while the rest of the month varied between -2% and +3%.

The report notes a new seasonal pattern influenced by the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. Despite death figures aligning with the current median, November 2023’s statistics are notably higher (+12%) when compared to the same month in 2019. The report considers the impact of the pandemic’s continued prevalence of respiratory diseases on these figures.

Germany’s death figures in November 2023 were part of the EuroMOMO network’s assessment, with slight excess mortality noted in certain regions. The report provides methodological insights, emphasizing the use of a median for a nuanced understanding of mortality trends amid demographic shifts and the COVID-19 pandemic.
