German Tourism Shows Signs of Recovery with 40.5% Increase in Overnight Stays in February 2023, But Still Below Pre-Pandemic Levels

The Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) has released data on nights spent by visitors in Germany in February 2023. According to provisional results, there were 26.4 million overnight stays recorded in accommodation establishments, which is a significant increase of 40.5% compared to February 2022, when there were still closures and restrictions due to the Covid-19 pandemic. However, the number of overnight stays in February 2023 was still 11.7% lower than in February 2020, the corresponding month before the pandemic.

The data also reveals that the figures refer to accommodation establishments with 10 or more bed places and tourist campsites with 10 or more pitches. A chart depicting the trend of overnight stays in accommodation establishments from January 2011 to February 2023 shows a gradual increase over the years, with some fluctuations.

The data suggests that while there has been a significant recovery in the number of overnight stays in Germany compared to the previous year, there is still a gap to be bridged to reach pre-pandemic levels. The impact of Covid-19 on the tourism industry is evident, but the recent increase in overnight stays in February 2023 is an encouraging sign of recovery. It remains to be seen how the tourism industry in Germany and around the world will continue to rebound from the effects of the pandemic in the coming months.
