Nurses in Germany Call for Better Working Conditions and Appreciation on International Nurses Day, Study Shows

On International Nurses Day, the Federal Ministry of Health has released a study on the job satisfaction of nursing staff and trainees in acute and long-term care. The study, commissioned under the Concerted Action Care, involved over 5,500 professional nurses, making it one of the most extensive surveys of nursing professionals in the last ten years.

According to the results, nursing staff and trainees desire reasonable pay and more colleagues in their job. Additionally, they want more support with childcare, reliable duty rosters, and more digital support. The study also found that many nurses consider the working atmosphere and management style of superiors to be in need of significant improvement.

Federal Health Minister Prof. Karl Lauterbach acknowledged the justified demand for appropriate payment, a staffing level geared to the care effort, and better digital equipment. He emphasized that nursing staff needs appreciation, a say, a respectful working atmosphere, and consideration for their family situation.

International Nurses Day is celebrated on May 12th and commemorates the birthday of Florence Nightingale, a British nurse and pioneer of modern nursing. The day highlights the invaluable role that nurses play in the healthcare system and the need for better working conditions and support for nursing staff.
